Changing The Tone

News and Society
Changing the Tone By Scott C. Smith 'The spirit of cooperation I have seen in this hall is what is needed in Washington, D.C. It is the challenge of our moment. After a difficult election, we must put politics behind us and work together to make the promise of America available for every one of our citizens. I am optimistic that we can change the tone in Washington, D.C.' -- President George W. Bush, speech, Dec. 13, 2000. 'That background may lack the polish of Washington. Then again, I don't ...

Kyrgyzstan's Revolution

News and Society
Kyrgyzstan's swift and sudden revolution happened almost before one could have managed to pronounce this obscure country's name. The chaos in the country where activists chased away their ruling leaders show a country coming to terms with a colonial past and on a quest to find a new identity. Despite the looting and the ' tempered- violence, the initial reading of this revolution is that the catharsis might preclude a positive outcome. Not so much only for this tiny country, but ...

Just how democratic is the Middle East getting?

News and Society
If democracy is any more up for a redefinition anywhere, now would be the time and the Middle East would be the place. Events in Iraq and the elections of the Palestians had a contageous effect in other Middle Eastern countries too. For the first time in at least 50 years, we see grassroots demand for updated versions of democracy in countries that have long been dominated by authoritarian regimes; Egyptians have been demanding to be allowed a multi party system, in Lebanon the fall of a ...

Banana Republic - United Kingdom

News and Society
The recent scathing remarks by High Court Judge Richard Mawrey over the disgraceful actions of the six Labour councillors from Birmingham is something the city could well do without. The Judge went as far as to say that the recent electoral fraud would disgrace even a banana republic. It transpires that the vote rigging was part of an organised campaign to steal, forge and/or alter thousands of postal votes to ensure that Labour did not suffer from another backlash against it over the Iraq war. ...

The Democratic Ideal and New Colonialism

News and Society
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful concerned individuals can precipitate change in the world ... indeed, it is the only thing that ever has" (Margaret Meade) "Democracy" is not the rule of the people. It is government by periodically vetted representatives of the people. Democracy is not tantamount to a continuous expression of the popular will as it pertains to a range of issues. Functioning and fair democracy is representative and not participatory. Participatory "people power" is ...

The Iraqi Election

News and Society
Just a couple of thoughts about the recent "election" in Iraq: 1- The election in Iraq is neither a victory nor a defeat for George W. Bush and the ideology he represents. At no point prior to the start of this conflict was the establishment of democracy an explicitly stated goal of this administration. That is not why the Senate voted to authorize the use of force and it is not why the American people gave the war overwhelming initial support. Democracy, if that does in fact come about, would ...

Polarize This!

News and Society
Surely the theme for the recent U.S. elections was polarization versus unity. According to Scripture, 'A double minded man is unstable in all his ways'. A nation of double minded people is unstable in all its ways. A nation where street crime is punished and high crime rewarded. Where corporate drug pushers sell stock, kill millions of people annually (no one knows the actual numbers because drug poisoning appears as natural causes on a coroner's report, due to the time span.) and street ...
